Art Room

The art room in the Jimmy Everest Cancer Center was ablaze in orange and black in September.  Coach Sean Sutton and the O.S.U. basketball team participated in "Coaches Against Cancer" with a visit to the patients
and their families in the clinic.  Pistol Pete and Eskimo Joe were there to visit with the patients as well. The players and patients threw free shots, ate cake and had a great time visiting with each other.

The team passed out tee shirts and lots of O.S.U. souvenirs. Coach Sutton and the players signed autographs for everyone and answered lots of questions. A great time was had by all!

Whats Happening in the Art Room

The OU's Children's Physicians Jimmy Everest Cancer Center serves between 60 and 80 new patients a year. Approximately 300 exsisting patients are also treated. The art therapy program is made available daily to patients and their siblings during clinic visits to the Jimmy Everest Cancer Center. Sickle Cell patients also participate in our activities and events. It is not uncommon to find parents working on projects with their children while visiting with other parents and patients. The Art Room is a fun place staffed daily by energetic and creative volunteers. These creative engineers and child enthusiasts work hard to ensure that patients and their families have a positive, fun and happy experience each time they visit the clinic. Volunteers supply the patient with art projects & craft ideas during their stay. The Art Room is a gathering place for parents and caregivers to seek support and share information in a friendly atmosphere.

Painting, singing, writing poetry, dancing the hokey pokey and sprinkling glitter everywhere are just some of the fun activities in the Happy Place art space. The Art Room is situated in a very serious building but the fun and silly adventures and activities are the only serious thing happening inside these walls. The Art Room has become a friendly place where patients feel comfortable. While waiting to see the doctor, receiving chemotherapy or waiting for a painful procedure, patients meet new friends, and gain the support of one another.

Here are some of the activities coming up in our happy art space.

Art Room Pace

The Art Room has slowed down it's pace a little after our non-stop pipe-cleaner chain building in February. We are awaiting news from Guinness World Record people on our attempt to set the record for the World's Longest Heart-shape Pipe-Cleaner Chain. We know we set a record for fun and friendship and we know it is a record that will never be broken.

Zoe celebrated her birthday and brought a beautiful pink birthday cake to share. We played musical chairs (which can be very tricky with an IV pole attached to you)! Zoe was the perfect party hostess!

Anna and Calvin made cute birdie hand puppets from bright yellow gardener's gloves. They decorated the little birdie nests with ribbon and ofcourse GLITTER! Anna entertained us with a high-energy dance from the movie "Chicken-Little" and lip-synced the sound track. She is very talented...look out Hollywood!

We all danced a little, laughed a lot, shared a warm Tuesday morning together in our little Art Room.
